About boardgame.digital

Board games bring people together. But in a world that is becoming increasingly digital, fast-paced, and often anonymous, new challenges arise: people move away, friend groups change, time becomes scarce, and not everyone can easily participate in local game nights or large events.

This is exactly where boardgame.digital comes in.

The virtual board game convention creates an additional space where people can play, laugh, discover new games, and become part of a community — regardless of where they live, their mobility, financial situation, or social barriers.

At the same time, this is not about replacing traditional board game gatherings.
Nothing can replace the experience of sitting around a real table together. boardgame.digital therefore does not see itself as a competitor to local game groups, clubs, conventions, or events, but as an extension of board game culture.

boardgame.digital was created in 2022 at the end of the pandemic by Basti from the Twitch channel “Geekpunkt.” It was inspired by several large digital board game initiatives that emerged during lockdowns and contact restrictions, but which have unfortunately been scaled back significantly since then.

Since then, boardgame.digital has taken place at least once a year as a small open “beta test” event. Starting in 2026, we are opening the convention beyond our own community and making it accessible to a wider audience.

The long-term plan is to host the convention three times a year:

  • a large main event at the beginning of the year
  • an XS edition in early summer
  • and a pre-show event shortly before SPIEL Essen, focused on upcoming releases

Digital formats make many things possible that are often difficult to achieve offline:

  • People from different regions and social backgrounds can come together
  • Social isolation can actively be reduced through shared gaming experiences
  • People with physical limitations or social barriers gain easier access to the community
  • Board game culture becomes visible, alive, and accessible online

boardgame.digital wants to be exactly that kind of platform:
open, inclusive, accessible, and community-driven.

Or simply put:

Play online. Connect offline.
